Stop the clichés! Even if it is still often associated with All Saints' Day in France and remains the best plant to adorn graves, the chrysanthemum deserves a better reputation than that of the "daisy of the dead". What for? Because it is a magnificent plant capable of decorating terraces and balconies. Its presence guarantees a diversity of shapes and a wide range of autumn colours on the outdoor side: pink, red, orange, yellow or white. Native to Korea, the chrysanthemum is very popular in Japan where it is nicknamed "autumn flower" and symbolizes pleasure and happiness.

HOW TO PLANT A CHRYSANTHEMUM?

In pots or in the ground, this hardy plant is easy to grow thanks to deciduous foliage that can withstand temperatures of -5°. The chrysanthemum likes sunny locations and cool, well-drained soil where it can spread out all its charismatic flowers. You can enrich your soil with compost.

WHEN TO PLANT AND TAKE CUTTINGS FROM A CHRYSANTHEMUM?

As for the planting date, the chrysanthemum is completely autumn, since the container plant will be placed in the ground in September and October to obtain magnificent flower beds in spring. The cutting of a chrysanthemum will wait for the first mild temperatures of spring between March and the end of May.

HOW TO CARE FOR A CHRYSANTHEMUM?

Even if the chrysanthemum requires little care, apart from watering in the absence of rain, you must be vigilant on certain points. It is advisable to remove the spent flowers to allow the other flowers to develop better. After flowering, the plant will have to be cut back by pruning it very short to make room for new shoots. In the event of a heavy frost, mulching will be welcome to protect the chrysanthemum.

WHICH VARIETY OF CHRYSANTHEMUM TO CHOOSE?

There are more than 40 species of chrysanthemum: the famous perennial autumn daisy Chrysanthemum x rubellum, the annual chrysanthemum carinatum, the garden chrysanthemum, the chrysanthemum coronarium and the florists' chrysanthemum available for All Saints' Day, the Chrysanthemum x Grandiflorum... It should be noted that this last variety is not resistant to cold and humidity and will therefore not last from one year to the next, without being properly protected.
