Extension cord and reel: how to choose them?

Home

Extension cords and electric reels allow you to plug in electrical devices far from a power outlet. Available in several lengths, cable sections, and powers, they must be selected and adapted to their use. Here's our advice for choosing an extension cord and an electric reel.

Extension cord and reel: how to choose them?

Electric extension and reel: the essentials to know

An extension cord, also called an extension cord, is very useful in everyday life. It is essential for drilling into a wall far from an electrical outlet or trimming a garden hedge. Coupled with an electric reel, it is also used to connect several devices simultaneously.

An extension cord consists of a cable containing two or three electrical wires and a plug at each end (male and female). It can be used alone or combined with an electric reel. The two devices can be purchased separately and then assembled.

What length for an extension cord or electric reel?

Before choosing your electric extender or reel, determine what length is needed. For an electric mower, for example, take into account any obstacles to avoid.

This can sometimes represent a few meters to add to the initial length required. The same goes for the other devices to be connected and the distances to be covered. Choose the length necessary for other interventions.

Extension cord and electric reel: 2 G or 3 G, which one to choose?

In the product sheets for extension cords or electric reels, the mention of 2 G or 3 G is indicated. This informs that the extension device has 2 or 3 conductors. 2 G indicates 2 conductors, without the earth wire. 3 G refers to 3 conductive wires including the earth one.

The choice between 2G and 3G depends on the devices to be plugged into the electrical extender. In fact, unlike other electrical devices, those of class II (with reinforced insulation) do not need to be connected to the earth.

This is the case for most portable power devices and corded gardening tools. If you reserve your extension cord or electrical reel only for class II devices, opt for two-wire (2 G) extension cords. With one less wire over a few tens of meters, you will save weight!

An extension cord or electric reel?

You will have understood: extension cord or electric reel often designate the same device. As indicated above, you can choose an empty reel and then install an extension inside it. You can also purchase a reel with an integrated extension or opt for an extension only.

In other words, an extension cord may be sufficient, for example, to power an electric mower exclusively. The downside is that it can become a bag with knots and get on your feet. Placed in a reel, it is easier to store and use.

Reels with extensions have the advantage of having several sockets. You can therefore connect several electrical devices. In any case, evaluate your needs before making your choice.

Cable type and power for an electric extender or reel

The cable of an electric reel or extender has two or three coated wires of the same cross-section. The insulating envelope of the wires and the electrical sheath are made of the same material. An H05VVF PVC cable is inexpensive and suitable for domestic use.

For professional use, H07RN-F-type cables are more suitable. This is because the wire wrapping and sheathing are made of soft rubber and are weatherproof. In addition, the use of three conductors is recommended (neutral, phase and ground).

The cable cross-section can be 1.5 or 2.5 mm². For medium-power devices, 1.5 mm² wires are sufficient. To connect more powerful machines, opt for a 2.5 mm² cross-section. To find out the cable cross-section, look at the numbers on the G of the product data-sheet (1.5 or 2.5).

Also find out about the maximum power supported by the reel, coiled cable and unwound cable. For normal use, a maximum power of 3,200 W (unwound) is sufficient. When you reach the coiled cable power, be sure to unwind it completely.

By doing so, you avoid any risk of overheating. Indeed, with the coiled cable, the resistance is greater and the risk of overheating increases. If this happens, the cable can burn out and the electrical installation can trip.

What are the options for an electric hose reel?

There are several options to choose from depending on your needs. Here are the most commonly offered:

Fixed frame or frame. This allows you to wind or unwind the cable without unplugging the devices.
High protection rating. To withstand dust and bad weather, an IP 44 is the minimum required.
Thermal fuse. Very useful to avoid any risk of overheating.
Ergonomic handle, for a better grip.
